Reflective moments from Hearts on Fire
What Kind of Tree Are You?
I think that I shall never see
A poem as lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast.
These are the beginning words of the poem Trees by Joyce Kilmer. I love that poem. It makes me think of the gift of trees from God. Trees are as varied and unique as the people God created. And one of the important parts of a tree is the root system. Through the roots, the tree sucks up the nutrients for survival, and sends down the roots for strength and stability.
Isn’t that just like us? Don’t we get our sustenance from being rooted to God? Don’t we get our strength and stability from God? I recently was at a spiritual retreat where we were challenged to think of what kind of tree we would be. It was interesting and very thought provoking. If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?
Would you have a deep tap root and reached way down into the earth?
Would your branches and your root system be wide and shallow?
Would they be deep and narrow?
Would they be shallow, but interwoven with other trees around you for stability and strength?
Something to think about.
